“FREE STANDING LACE” designs are digitized to be stitched on water-soluble stabilizer, to get awesome effects and great looking items.
There are many different types of water-soluble stabilizer available. I actually tested all my lace designs on Vilene, a fibrous water-soluble stabilizer, and I found it great, still better using 2 layers in the hoop.
The bobbin and the top thread need to be same weight. Because freestanding lace is two-sided, you’ll want your bobbin thread to match your top thread, so wind a bobbin with the same thread that you use on top. For items like coaster, which are supposed to lie on the table, I just use for the bobbin the main colour of the design, to save some time, but it depends on the colours of the project, so make your choice carefully.
After you’ve finished embroidering the design, trim the excess stabilizer away and soak in warm water, until the stabilizer is washed away.
Blot dry with a towel, and then allow to dry. Sometimes I use hair dryer to save time. You may want to gently press it with an iron, but it’s not always necessary… and you’re done!
